From the ED 5.5.16

by on May 5, 2016

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing this on May Day – May 1st – traditionally a celebration of spring. Unfortunately I am writing this is from a cold, wet, and snowy Colorado. However this allows me time to reflect on my time earlier this week in Miami, FL, where we completed a wonderful FISBO/MISBO 2016 Business Officer Conference. There were many highlights, including the 80 degree temperatures and the beautiful beach as seen from my room at the Sea View Hotel. Gary Butts and his team at Miami Country Day School were our hosts for this event and provided a great venue for learning and connecting with colleagues.

I believe most that attended will agree that the opening keynote session given by Brett Jacobsen, Head of School, Mount Vernon Presbyterian School, Atlanta, GA was inspirational and very thought-provoking. Brett spoke about leading the transformational changes at MVPS and the challenges associated with significant change in a relatively short period of time. He and Bruce Morine, CFO, then discussed the practical side of transformational change – a place where many schools struggle. One example they discussed is the Mount Vernon Institute for Innovation. Watch the short video on their website for some insight on what is being accomplished at MVPS. I want to thank Brett, Bruce, and all of the tremendous speakers, as well as the sponsors that led to the success of this program.

MISBO quickly shifts gears for final preparation for our next event. We expect this event to sell out, so please register soon.

  • June 12-14 is a new program which we believe will be incredibly valuable for your business office staff and your school. The Not-Just-the-Business Officer Intensive will be hosted by Woodward Academy, Atlanta, GA. This unique opportunity for everyone in the business office will provide both serious learning and wonderful networking opportunities. Click here for more information – space is limited!

By now you have received some information about MISBO membership renewal as well as a recent Purchasing Consortium Savings Report. The direct savings from the Purchasing Consortium is only one of a number of valuable MISBO member benefits. We also just announced two new insurance programs:

  • ISM Insurance is a new MISBO vendor offering an International Student Accident and Sickness program. Many MISBO schools are currently using this program and upon renewal will experience immediate and significant savings. With the rapid growth in enrollment of international students in both day and boarding schools, we believe that this program is timely and of great value to our schools. More information can be found using the link above.
  • The second insurance program is a new MISBO Property and Casualty Program offered in conjunction with Education Insurance Services, a sister company to United Educators. This program will offer MISBO member schools a one-stop opportunity for all of their insurance requirements by combining the offerings of United Educators and Chubb. This program is accessible by any broker, allowing your school to choose your own broker. We believe that this high-quality program will be accessible to all MISBO schools. More information can be found using the link above.

There are so many other MISBO member benefits that bring immediate value to your school. Review this list and pay particular attention to the webinars offered at no cost to MISBO members as well as the Knowledge Center offered by Fisher & Phillips – again at no cost.

MISBO continues to connect with our schools and vendors to bring great value to MISBO membership. First and foremost, MISBO exists to help our schools – this means you! Please let us know how we are doing. You can contact me directly or any of the MISBO staff. A full directory can be found here.

I wish you all a wonderful May and a great conclusion to another school year!

Sincerely,
Marc
