From the ED 6.4.15

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainability continues to be an important topic for our schools. I had the opportunity last week to provide the opening keynote session for the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools’ Administrator Conference. The audience consisted of over 100 Heads from Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana schools. I spoke about my thoughts on the “Five Pillars of School Sustainability: Educational Transformation, Marketing, Governance, Finance, and Leadership” since these are ongoing challenges for our schools. We spent a good deal of our time together discussing Governance. Our schools must have strong, strategic, generative boards to continue to lead the educational transformation required for success in the 21st century.

I am proud to say that the MISBO board is operating in a truly strategic, and generative manner. I am looking forward to the leadership of our new Board Chair, Julie Ray, Director of Business and Finance, Mount Paran School, Kennesaw, GA. I would also like to welcome three new board members whose service to MISBO officially begins July 1, 2015:

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank two of your colleagues who have completed long terms of incredibly valuable service to MISBO:

Lastly, I am looking forward to joining nearly 60 of your colleagues at MISBO’s first Human Resources Intensive beginning this weekend at Woodward Academy.

Other News and Reminders:

Membership Dues Renewal:

Thank you to the nearly 50% of MISBO member schools that completed their own membership renewal. This is a great accomplishment for our first year with this new system. The others received an email last week with a link to their membership dues renewal invoice. Remember that beginning this year, we accept credit cards for dues renewals!

For more information on the renewal process click here.

Twitter Chat:

As MISBO continues to experiment with new types of professional development, we are hosting our first series of Twitter Chats to discuss the article we recently published “Advanced Placement” (www.misbo.com/advancedplacement). This is a series of case studies about Head of School transitions. I hope you will consider joining me for the next chat which will begin on Tuesday June 9th at 4:00 pm ET.  You can follow me @marcll or MISBO @MISBOConnects.

By now most of your schools have completed the school year, had graduation events, and all of the other events that are associated with the end of the school year. It is a busy time, but also a time to look back on the year and consider the successes that have occurred since last summer. It is a time to regroup, recharge, and refresh as you shift gears into “summer mode” which for most of you means some different schedules and a different flow of work. If your school is working on a construction project (and many are this year) that adds a new dimension to your summer plans.

I encourage you all to take some time for yourselves – to catch up on some reading. Here is a recent list of some of the things I have been reading.  Let me know what great books are on your desk or e-reader and what you plan to read by sending me an email at marclevinson@misbo.com or by commenting below.

Sincerely,
Marc
