From the ED 4.2.15

by on April 2, 2015

Dear Colleagues,

I hope you all saw the new MISBO Minute last week, but if you missed it or forgot to revisit that email, I would recommend that you take a look.  The email was sent on March 23rd.  It not only provides great information about MISBO in a short, concise video (which I think is great) but it was produced by children in one of our schools. For this MISBO Minute we are so thankful for the efforts of the 8th grade class at East Cobb Christian School in Atlanta.

The goal of asking students in our schools to be involved reinforces the question of “why MISBO exists” – it truly exists to serve those children. MISBO serves schools and schools are about children, therefore everything we do is for the students in your schools.

MISBO board and staff have been spending a great deal of time and energy considering this question of “why” as we consider the vision and mission for MISBO and our goals and aspirations for the future. Among other resources, we watched and discussed Simon Sinek’s Ted Talk, Start With Why.  This has led us in new directions. I just read Patrick Lencioni’s The Advantage. Chapter 2, “Create Clarity”, discusses this idea of “why” and also asks us to consider “Six Critical Questions” about our organizations. If you or your leadership team may be struggling with this, I highly recommend reading at least this one chapter of the book.

This leads me to a very important topic. MISBO is currently accepting nominations for board positions that begin July 1, 2015. Board terms are three years with the possibility of a second three-year term. You can find all of the information you need here – misbo.com/15nominations. The deadline for nominations is Friday, April 10th. You may nominate yourself or be nominated by a colleague. Here is a list of the current MISBO board members. Feel free to reach out to any of these people, as well as myself, with questions. I know that they will each tell you that board membership is a rewarding experience and provides them not just an opportunity to serve but also tremendous professional development.

As MISBO continues to experiment with new types of professional development, we are hosting our first series of Twitter Chats!  Our chats will be discussing the article we recently published, Advanced Placement, which includes a series of case studies of Head of School transitions. I hope you will consider joining me for these ‘chats’ on the second Tuesday of the month from April through June, starting on April 14th at 4:00 pm ET using the hashtag #MISBOAP. You can follow me @marcll or MISBO @MISBOConnects.

Sincerely,
Marc
