From the ED 10.9.14

Dear Colleagues,

The MISBO Board of Directors met over a two day period last week. The profile of the MISBO board has changed quite dramatically over the past 2 years. Currently there are 15 directors including one President, two HR Directors, two Technology Directors, one VP/Treasurer (Episcopal Diocese Schools of VA) and nine Business Officers. We also added a new position of Emeritus Director and that position is filled by Bob Robinson, formerly of Charlotte Latin School. The profile of the board also includes members from throughout the geographic region. We look for diversity in position, geography, school size, school type, ethnicity, etc. For the current roster of Directors click here,  The goal is to build a board reflective of our membership because they are YOUR voice and YOUR representation. This helps MISBO serve our schools in the most appropriate manner.

There were two significant components of this meeting. First, with the leadership of Julie Ray, Mount Paran Christian School, we spent several hours training the board to be MISBO advocates. The MISBO Directors will be making calls to member schools throughout the school year. MISBO staff assisted during this meeting to allow our Directors to be able to answer your questions. There are two purposes of the outreach: 1) as MISBO has grown, it has become more difficult for MISBO staff to stay in touch with our members, and 2) MISBO Directors want to hear from each of you about how we are doing, what we can do better, what you need from MISBO to make your membership as valuable as possible. They need to know how to best represent you! Please take the time to talk to the MISBO Directors when they call. Along with the MISBO staff, they are here to serve you and your schools.

The second part of the meeting was a continuation of the strategic thinking conversations which we began in earnest in February. The collaborative thinking of the MISBO directors and staff drives our initiatives and efforts throughout the year bringing our members the only purchasing program uniquely designed for the needs of independent schools, live and web based professional development, tools to connect and collaborate with your peers, and resources to help you succeed at your job.

We are busy on the final touches for the MISBO Annual Conference to be held in Tampa, FL November 2-4. Early Bird registration is through October 10th. Discounted hotel rooms are available until October 17th. Everything you need to find including the full schedule can be found here. I am especially excited to bring you Annmarie Neal, our opening keynote speaker.  Annmarie will talk to us about leadership, education, and more. I was introduced to Annmarie through Tony Wagner’s recent book Creating Innovators, a must read for all in the education field. Our closing speaker is Syreeta Gates, one of the young innovators profiled in Wagner’s book. I think you will find these opening and closing sessions compelling, with so much more in between! I look forward to seeing you in Tampa if not before!

Sincerely,
Marc
