From the ED 9.25.14

Dear Colleagues,

One of the many joys I have with the work I do is to be able to visit our schools. Nearly every week as I travel I take the opportunity to visit a MISBO school. Last week while in Atlanta I spent the morning at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School (MVPS). “We are a school of inquire, innovation, and impact.” This is so apparent as one walks around the school and talks with the students, faculty and staff. On my tour of the Lower School with Shelley Clifford (LS Head) and Nicole Martin (Director of 21st Century Learning) I was able to observe children immersed in their work. One of their projects is a ‘cardboard challenge’ based on the concept or Caine’s Arcade – watch this video – – it is inspiring and amazing to see how MVPS has embraced this to help them through their educational journey. I would also like to thank Bo Adams, Chief Learning and Innovation Officer (they have great titles at this school) for allowing me to spend some time with their newly formed iDiploma group. These 12 Upper School Students are the beginning of a new program for MVPS that looks to be very exciting. I also had the opportunity to spend some time with Bruce Morine, CFO. Bruce has been at MVPS for some time and has seen the transformation from a quiet small K-8 school, to one of the most innovative, pre-K-12 schools in the country with over 900 students. Like many of you, his staff in the business office includes just two other people. Bruce – I am certain the school could not have accomplished what it has without your guidance over the years!

As I left MVPS I was energized by what I had learned during my visit. This helps me and the MISBO staff help you do your jobs better, more efficiently and more effectively. I believe it is critically important for all of the business operations people at your school to fully understand the mission and the programs at your school. The 2014 MISBO Annual Conference program is designed to provide attendees with big picture, strategic thinking topics (Annmarie Neal and Syreeta Gates) as well as tangible, take away learning to help you be more successful. We have sessions (tracks) for Business Officers, Human Resource Directors, and Technology Professionals. Take a look at the full schedule at In addition to the sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about savings from nearly 30 MISBO vendors. Most importantly you will have the chance to network with your peers. We know from your feedback that at times you feel isolated in your work at your schools. This is the time for you to take a break, and spend 2-3 days in Tampa, November 2-4, networking and learning with your colleagues.

I look forward to seeing you in Tampa – if not before!
