From the ED 6.19.14

Dear Colleagues,

I spent three days last week with about 20 new Business Officers from schools throughout the MISBO region at MISBO’s New Business Officer Intensive. It was a great learning experience for everyone. I was reminded many times over those three days about the joys AND challenges of being a business officer at an independent school. I believe that everyone left with a clearer picture of what it means to be a Business Officer. One attendee who just finished her first year expressed what so many of us know:

  • each day is different
  • each day goes by very quickly
  • we are never able to get done the things on our list
  • spending our days around the children in our schools is a component of what we do which makes our work very unique and incredibly meaningful

The subjects that were discussed varied from independent school culture to financial aid (lively conversation about tuition remission), risk management, facilities management, 403 (b) fiduciary responsibilities (I know this is not very glamorous but very important), and much more. It is very difficult to limit the program to a certain set of topics because there is so much to know.

One new Business Officer who was given the opportunity to spend about 30 days with the person they are succeeding asked me, “What are the most important things I need to learn from this person?” I am still thinking about the answer and would welcome any thoughts or comments any of you may wish to contribute. Please send me a note at, or comment on this blog, and I will compile these ideas and let you all know.
