From the ED 2.13.14

Dear Colleagues,

As I wrote two weeks ago, I hope all schools affected by this week’s snow and ice storms, took the appropriate precautions, focused on students and kept everyone safe, warm and dry.  If you are interested in hearing how other schools used these “closed” days as e-learning days, follow the hashtag #snopportunity.

Last week I had the opportunity to attend the Florida Education Technology Conference (FETC) recently in Orlando. This is a gathering of education technology leaders, teacher, and exhibitors from all of the US and beyond.

The opening keynote on Thursday morning was given by Jamie Casap, Google’s Senior Education Evangelist. He spoke about the transformation we are seeing (or need to see) in K-12 Education. You can watch the keynote here. Jamie can be followed on twitter @jcasap or read his blog here. I think that Jamie is worth following.

Another very interesting talk was by Lucien Vattel, CEO, GameDesk and Founder of Playmaker School. You can watch a TEDx presentation by Vattel here and learn more about GameDesk here. Vattel spoke about his vision of the future of education and while similar to Casap and others, it has his unique twist which is evident in the work he is doing with GameDesk and Playmaker School.

Another session I attended was given by Susan Bearden (@s_bearden), IT Director, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, and Tom Murray (@thomascmurray), Director of Technology, Bucks County, PA. They spoke about how to use Twitter and specifically Twitter Chats for Professional Development. I found this very valuable and MISBO will be considering ways to bring a different type of professional development to our members through Twitter Chats. If you are not using Twitter, it is a great Professional Development resource. You can follow me @marcll or MISBO @MISBOconnects.

Most of you have a bit of a break with a long holiday weekend – enjoy!
