FCIS New Head’s Institute

I had the opportunity last Thursday and Friday to spend time with a great group of Heads from FCIS (FL) schools. These people were new to their positions – some had just started. It was a great opportunity to get to know them and learn more about our FL schools. The Head of School position is very difficult and there is no career path that truly prepares a person to take on this role. Most are educators – teachers, then a series of administrative roles in a school. Some have come from public schools adding a new dimension to the challenge. The Head of School at an Independent School is the CEO of a multi-million dollar corporation with a very wide range of responsibilities requiring a set of skills that can take many years to develop. Just learning the financial issues is a big step. Add to that the issues with governance and operations and these people deserve our respect (and compassion). The most successful independent schools I know and work with are ones with a solid leadership team starting with the Head of School. I wish this new cohort of FL Heads success in their new adventures.
